Apple has unveiled Apple Intelligence 2.0, a significant expansion of its on-device AI capabilities that brings autonomous agent functionality to iPhone 16 Pro and later, all iPad Pro models, and Macs with M4 chips.
The headline feature is ‘App Agents’ — AI assistants that can navigate across multiple apps to complete complex tasks. For example, you can say ‘Book me a flight to San Francisco next Friday, find a hotel near Moscone Center, and add both to my calendar.’ The agent will interact with airline apps, hotel booking services, and Calendar autonomously.
All processing happens on-device using a combination of a 3B parameter Apple foundation model and a new ‘workflow engine’ that maps natural language instructions to app-specific actions. Apple emphasizes that no user data leaves the device, and all agent actions require user confirmation by default.
