The AI search engine space has consolidated into two major players: Perplexity AI and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search. We ran both through 500 identical queries across five categories to see which delivers better results.
Methodology
We tested factual queries (100), technical questions (100), news/current events (100), research tasks (100), and creative/opinion queries (100). Each answer was blind-rated by two human evaluators on accuracy, completeness, source quality, and usefulness.

| Factual | 87% | 84% | |
| Technical | 82% | 89% | |
| News | 91% | 78% | |

**Where Perplexity Wins**
Perplexity excels at news and current events. Its real-time web search is faster and more thorough, and its citation format makes it easy to verify claims. For “what happened today” queries, it’s clearly superior.
Where ChatGPT Search Wins
ChatGPT Search dominates on technical questions and research tasks, largely because GPT-5’s reasoning capabilities allow it to synthesize complex information from multiple sources more effectively. It’s also significantly better at creative and open-ended queries.
The Verdict
Use Perplexity for news, current events, and quick factual lookups. Use ChatGPT Search for research, technical questions, and anything requiring deep reasoning. Both are worth subscribing to — they’re complementary, not redundant.
